In 1861, Samuel Clemens arrived in Virginia City to try his hand at prospecting. After a year, he got his start as a writer for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. As his coverage of the bustling frontier mining town grew, Clemens adopted a pen name: MARK TWAIN.
