Carson Valley, NV – What is it that brings an influx of cyclists into the Carson Valley region every summer? Is it the proximity to Lake Tahoe, with all of its designated bike paths and thrilling alpine trails? Or maybe it is the brisk mountain air, offering a welcome respite from the sweltering July heat? What about the challenge of high altitude climbs in the midst of the picturesque Sierra Nevadas? Whatever the draw, countless cycling clubs and bike enthusiasts prep each June, July, and August for some of the best cycling events in the West, located right here in the Northern Nevada region.
Kick off summer and celebrate cyclist culture with the Tour of the Carson Valley.
Beginning June 20th, cyclists are invited to see the Carson Valley via bike. The Barbecue & Ice Cream Social is a fun historic bicycle tour, appropriate for cyclists for all abilities, in the beautiful Carson Valley. Pick your desired mileage and pedal back in time on a route which takes you along the eastern foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains on former Pioneer, Pony Express, Stagecoach, and Emigrant trails. All varieties of pedal bikes are welcome, and if for no other reason, come to see a dazzling array of road bikes, mountain bikes, cruisers, fixed gear bikes, custom burning man bikes, and more!
A week later, on June 27th, the local club Alta Alpina kicks off their Alta Alpina Challenge . The Alta Alpina is a choose your own adventure cycling challenge with
five different programs, and numerous different route combinations. “Riding the Wild Sierra” June 27th starts here in the Carson Valley, and spans the valley, from the Foothill and Kingsbury regions to the Alpine Counties famous for their climbs and wilderness rides. Other options include fun rides in the Carson Valley, a five pass and eight pass challenge, and traditional metric and century style events.
On July 11th the Carson Valley transforms into the base camp for those brave enough to take on the Alpine County Death Ride Experience. Recognized as one of the premier cycling events in the West, the Death Ride® encompasses 129 miles and 15,000 feet of pure blood, sweat, and tears, made pleasurable by the magnificent scenery and warm hospitality of Alpine County! The Death Ride has become a legendary event in the local region, drawing riders and teams from around the world.
Of course, local riders in the area already know the secret to a fulfilling life: Live where you play. Riders in the Carson Valley and Northern Nevada enjoy nearly 300 days of sunny, ride-able weather annually. They train and enjoy great club rides all over the Eastern Sierra, Tahoe Basin and Alpine County, all year round.
