Col. John Reese went to Genoa, Carson Valley, Utah (Nevada) in the spring of 1851 and arrived there on June 1, 1851, to build a permanent trading post. He took with him provisions like eggs, bacon, flour, seed grain and seeds of all kinds, loaded in 13 wagons. The Reese party was sent out from Salt Lake City by Mormon leader, Brigham Young, to establish a trading post somewhere along the overland route to Sacramento. They built the station at Genoa, known as Mormon Station, later renamed Genoa by Judge Orson Hyde for the birth place of Christopher Columbus. The only ones to go with him were the drivers. They traveled the immigrant trail – no other white person was in the area. Find out more about the Carson Valley at this link: CARSON VALLEY
